Systems Evaluation

Simulation and flight tests.
The research facilities of the Institute of Flight Guidance provide the backbone for comprehensive demonstration and validation of newly developed systems and procedures in flight guidance and air traffic management.

A simulation network connects air traffic control, apron and tower, and operations control centre facilities with a cockpit simulator and an experimental cockpit in the ATTAS research aircraft.

The facilities altogether, in combination with expertise in methods and measurements of

  • system performance, in terms of safety, capacity, economy, and environmental impact,
  • human performance, workload, acceptance, and situation awareness

allow to tackle even most complex issues of air/ground cooperation in realistic experimental settings.

This is our basis for offering support in systems evaluation experiments, with particular emphasis on human factors methods, e.g.

  • work and task analysis,
  • interview and questionnaire techniques,
  • workload assessment,
  • analysis of visual scanning patterns (eye movements),
  • physiological parameters.
