Air Transport in Germany

15 September 2009

Air transport covering a traffic volume of more than 190 million passengers in Germany in 2008 has mainly been handled at around 25 international airports. The largest airport is Frankfurt/Main with approx. 53 million passengers per year. The network is built up by several other regional airports and a large number of airports operating with shorter runways.
In Germany, Lufthansa is the biggest airline with more than 400 thousand departures per year. The second largest airline is Air Berlin with about 125 thousand take-offs per year. They are followed by approximately 200 other airlines offering regularly scheduled and charter service. Furthermore, business air travel is significantly growing in Germany. Here, companies operate their own or chartered small aircraft, which do not require such an extensive infrastructure.
