The Institute contributes with its know-how and expertise in passive and active microwaves to the development and advancement of ground-based, airborne and spaceborne sensors. It concentrates its research work on the concept and development of new microwave techniques and systems, as well as sensor-specific applications. The Institute is mainly contributing to the space programme (85% of the basic funding), but is also contributing to the aeronautics (9%) and transportation (6%) programmes. Today, the Institute has more than 50% of its resources allocated to projects and external contracts.

Some current Projects

HGF Alliance: Remote Sensing and Earth System Dynamics

The HGF Alliance "Remote Sensing and Earth System Dynamics" aims at the development and evaluation of novel bio/geo-pysical information products derived from data acquired by a new generation of remote sensing satellites and their integration in earth system models for improving understanding and modelling ability of global environmental processes and ecosystem change.

A new global Digital Elevation Model (TanDEM-X)

TanDEM-X (TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement) has the goal of generating a global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with an unprecedented accuracy corresponding to the DTED-3 specifications. This goal will be achieved by means of a second SAR satellite (TanDEM-X) flying in a tandem orbit configuration with TerraSAR-X (TSX-1).

Germany's Radar Eye in Space (TerraSAR-X)

TerraSAR-X is a new German radar satellite that shall be launched in February 2007. The scheduled lifetime is 5 years. It carries a high frequency X-band SAR sensor that can be operated in different modes (resolutions) and polarization. TerraSAR-X will offer features that were not available from space before.

A new airborne SAR System (F-SAR)

F-SAR is the successor of the well-known E-SAR system, the Institute’s airborne SAR. F-SAR is a totally new development utilizing most modern hardware and commercial off-the-shelf components. F-SAR will operate in X-, C-, S-, L- and P-bands with fully polarimetric capability in all frequencies and four simultaneous recording channels.
