EDEN ISS
EDEN ISS is a project of the EDEN group, whereas an analogue test facility in Antarctica has been developed and built to enable future long-duration crewed space missions. As part of this project, a semi-enclosed greenhouse system was developed and built as an analogue test laboratory in the Antarctic. The EDEN-ISS greenhouse has been providing fresh fruit and vegetables in Antarctica since 2018 - in the immediate vicinity of the Neumayer Station III of the Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI). With the project, the scientists want to get as close as possible to a long-term mission into space: an isolated location, extreme environmental conditions, a small crew living together in seclusion, and a supply situation where fresh food is very welcome on the menu. In the first two years, the operation of the greenhouse has shown that the tested systems work well under real and harsh conditions.
EDEN Initiative
In 2011 the DLR Institute of Space Systems launched its research initiative called EDEN. The research initiative focuses on Bio-regenerative Life Support Systems (BLSS), especially greenhouse modules, and how these technologies can be integrated in future space habitats.
Post ISS
The system-analysis study “Post ISS” of DLR`s Institute for Space Systems in Bremen is a national preparatory work for the establishment of future programs in the field of human spaceflight and to secure long-term research and astronautical activities in the lower Earth Orbit.
KoSBeR
Within the field of concept development for satellites and human spaceflight (KoSBeR), a wide range of space missions are studied, and the corresponding system and mission analyses are carried out.
S2TEP (closed)
The micro satellite platform S2TEP will allow DLR to independently carry out technology experiments in the space environment.
