An all-round view in space: Panoramic dome on its way to the ISS


8 February 2010
Astronauts on the International Space Station will soon be able to enjoy a special view. The 130th shuttle mission lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on 8 February 2010 at 10:14 Central European Time. Space Shuttle Endeavour carried the 'Cupola' and the 'Tranquility' station module into space. The Cupola has seven windows and will offer a previously unavailable panoramic view of Earth.

Twenty-fifth series of German-Russian plasma physics experiments

From 27 to 29 January 2010, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov will be running the 25th series of complex plasma physics experiments on the International Space Station (ISS). The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has funded both the development of the experimental equipment and the research itself. There are numerous applications for the plasmas under investigation.

Neumayer-Station III

From the South Pole to the ISS – AWI and DLR to conduct joint health research in the Antarctic

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) intend to carry out health research together. On 23 November 2009, both partners signed a cooperation agreement to conduct bio-medical studies at Neumayer-Station III in Antarctica.

Space Shuttle Atlantis

Space Shuttle launched – Atlantis carrying 14-ton payload to ISS


16 November 2009
With the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis from Kennedy Space Center (Florida) on 16 November 2009 at 14:28 local time (20:28 Central European Time/CET), the orbiter has begun a twelve-day mission, STS-129, to the International Space Station.

Experiment ThermoLab

From Charité into space: ThermoLab experiment starts on the ISS


15 October 2009
On Thursday, 15 October 2009, the ThermoLab experiment was launched on the International Space Station (ISS). Scientists from Berlin’s Charité university hospital want to use it to study changes in the heat balance and the circulation of people who are in zero gravity conditions. A new sensor that was developed on behalf of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) by Charité and Draegerwerk Lübeck is being used.
