The involvement of DLR in studies and demonstrations of broadcast services in S-band goes a step beyond with the MiReSys study. The objective of the study is the definition of mission requirements and preliminary system specifications for the S-band mission on W2A, the first satellite over Europe with an S-band payload (and follow-on satellites).

In particular, the MiReSys study establishes the foundations for the design of an integrated hybrid system (satellite with the support of complementary ground components) in S-band that shall provide not only broadcasting services, but also messaging and two-way communications, especially for emergency scenarios to mass market and specific devices.

• Benefits:
  The S-band Mission of W2A is pioneer in Europe. It will not only provide broadcast (mobile) services, but go a step beyond deploying a novel return link, also in the S-band, that will allow interactive and messaging services, as well as two-way communications that can be very efficiently used for the management of emergency situations for public safety.

• Challenges:
  This study is focused on providing the foundations for the specification of a hybrid system (satellite and terrestrial components) that supports a variety of services with different QoS requirements, namely mobile interactive TV, messaging and two-way emergency communications, to mass market mobile (and fixed) devices. The challenges involved are the following:
  The forward link will be based on DVB-SH standard with adaptations to support not only typical broadcasting services, such as TV and radio, but also real-time traffic, including emergency communications.
  A novel random access return link is proposed for messaging and interactive services that must coexist with a dedicated return link for emergency communications.
  The coexistence of the return link waveforms and the access of different services in the system will be managed by dedicated resource management strategies.
  The system shall be based on IP(v6). The cost benefit of using widely used standards inserts overheads that must be minimized to use efficiently the available spectrum.
  Networking aspects are of high importance for the integration of satellite and terrestrial components in the system.
