Testbed development and testing for Free-space optical communication transceivers

Optical free-space communication technology has evolved in mobile aerospace applications in recent years because of its biggest advantage of high data-rate; low transmit power and availability of unregulated spectrum. DLR is involved in various experimental optical downlinks (laser communication) from mobile optical aerospace terminal to the ground station. For this, laser ethernet transceiver is being developed for variable data-rate up to 3.25 Gbps. Biggest challenges for the laser communication is fading effect in optical channel. In order to mitigate this effect, various intelligent transmission schemes have been implemented in the transceiver. A fading testbed that can simulate various fading in optical channel is being developed, to test the transceiver.
The main job of the candidate would be to support for further development of the testbed for optical communication transceivers. Basic testbed which is able to simulate the fading in optical channel already exists. These needs to be further developed and tested with laser ethernet transceivers and optical receiver front-ends. The work will include modifications in the testbed-hardware setup, further improvement of the user interface of the testbed-software, testing it with the laser-ethernet transceiver and optical receiver front-end.
