Institute of Communications and Navigation
Prof.Dr. Christoph Günther
Head of the Institute, Oberpfaffenhofen-Wessling

The Institute of Communications and Navigation develops and investigates new systems and methods for radio transmission and positioning. These are widely used in broadcasting multimedia contents as well as for internet connection of satellites, airplanes and remote areas. In the field of high rate data communications between satellite and ground the Institute works on optical free-space transmission methods.

In satellite navigation the Institute puts emphasis on safety-critical applications, which require a reliable positioning and timing information, and on positioning in urban canyons and indoors.
Vision

Global networking, the wide spread use of sensors and ubiquitous reliable positioning will tremendously increase the efficiency of economical processes, as well as improve quality of life and safety. They will support such diverse activities as transportation, industrial production, construction, farming, and many others.

Communication and positioning capabilities are needed in all environments, from local scales to intercontinental dimensions. A hierarchy of different systems will continue to exit, with satellites in a crucial role for navigation and selected communication missions.

Missions
  • High-rate data-transfer from deep-space missions, earth bound satellites and aeronautical platforms to the ground
  • Radio access outside terrestrial network coverage: in the air, at sea, and after disasters
  • Joint situational awareness and decision making for air, maritime, and ground based traffic – Prevention of accidents, reduction of the environmental impact, and improvement of traffic flow
  • Navigation and guidance of vehicles and carriers in critical situations: landing of aircrafts, berthing of ships, crossing dangerous bridges
  • Navigation in difficult environments: in underground railway stations, in urban canyons, and on other planets
