Satellite Radio Systems Group

The research group „Satellite Radio Systems“ is concerned with new transmission schemes and new concepts for future satellite communications systems. Main targets are an increase of efficiency in order to reduce bit transmission costs through new concepts and methods, an improvement of transmission quality, an increase of data rates, and the development of new application areas. All kinds of satellite systems are taken into account, mobile and broadband systems, systems for commercial or governmental use, or systems for space exploration.

Main research areas of the group are:

Channel Characterisation, Measurements and Modeling for Mobile and Broadband SatComs

  • L, S, Ku, Ka, and Higher Frequency Bands

Fade Mitigation Techniques for Satellite Systems

  • Adaptive Coding and Modulation
  • Forward Error Correction
  • Robust and reliable Synchronisation

QoS Support and Radio Resource Management/Scheduling

  • Satellite Specific RRM Algorithms
  • DVB-S2, DVB-RCS, 3G S-UMTS, BGAN
  • Impact of Fade Mitigation Techniques on RRM
  • On-board Switching

New Transmission Techniques and Receiver Technologies

  • Multi User Detection
  • Network Coding
  • Diversity-Reception

Protocol Design (Lower Layers) und Implementation

  • Advanced DVB-RCS
  • For GEO-Data Relais
  • Messaging via Satellite

System Design und System Dimensioning

  • Multibeam-Satellite Systems, Beamhopping-Systems
  • GEO Data Relais
  • Personalised Satellite Based Radio Concept
  • Satellite Broadband Internet Access and Digital TV for Fast Trains
  • Satellite Mobile TV

The group is conducting system- and protocol simulations for performance analyses as well as demonstrations and measurements. Experimental satellite terminals are available for the demonstration of new algorithms and transmission techniques.
