Ortigia

 ARTEMIS Satellite
zum Bild ARTEMIS Satellite

The main targets of the ORTIGIA project are:

  • to build a demonstrator platform of S-DMB applications in S-band
  • to investigate, by analysis and on-field experiments, the advantages of allternative systems, expecially OFDM-based ones
  • to assess the required gap-filler density, depending on the repeater architecture
  • to compare such solutions with the stat-of-the-art in digital broadcasting technologies for satellite.

In the advaced trials for mobile multimedia broadcasting in the S-band were succesfully carried out in April-May 2007 using Artemis satellite, a tracking antenna procured by DLR and a TDM receiver designed by FhG IIS.
DLR is analysing the trial results and comapring the performance of two different redundancy schemes, one where all the protection is provided by the physical layer decoder and interleaver, a second one where a transport layer FEC scheme designed by DLR is also added.
Second trials where the satellite coverage will be enhanced by terrestrial repeaters using OFDM waveform. A new receiver will be installed allowing for signal combining and for real time transport layer FEC decoding. The latter module of the demonstrator is being designed by DLR.
