Ionospheric Effects and Corrections

Propagation of an ionospheric perturbation front crossing Europe during the storm on 30 October 2003. The percentage deviation of the Total Electron Content (TEC) to monthly medians is shown.
Research and development activities are focused on monitoring, detection and forecasting of ionospheric processes for improving accuracy and reliability of space based positioning and navigation. Corresponding results are applicable in higher precision, safety of live applications and for improving ionospheric corrections in single frequency GNSS applications. The work is based on long-term expertise in the field of GNSS signal propagation and ionospheric research.

Fields of Research:

  • Ionospheric space weather effects
    • Development and demonstration of techniques and algorithms for monitoring the ionospheric state in near-real time by using ground and space based GNSS measurements
    • Studying ionospheric perturbations in the framework of solar-terrestrial relationships (space weather)
    • Impact on ionospheric effects on precise and safety critical GNSS applications
  • Ionospheric corrections
    • Development of methods and algorithms for retrieving ionospheric corrections and perturbation parameters from current monitoring data
    • Evaluation of the ionospheric state to match required safety regulations in safety of live applications
    • Development of correction and prediction models
