Integrity

The key performance parameter in Safety of Life (SoL) applications is the navigation integrity, i.e. the degree of trust one can place in the system functionality. Researchers on the DLR Navigation Integrity group investigate the robustness of the navigation solution, develop techniques to monitor threats and new methods to detect, mitigate or exclude a faulty element of the system, which could lead to an unacceptable error in the navigation solution.

Our goal is to bring GNSS onboard an Aircraft as a primary navigation system. To achieve that, we investigate error sources that can impact the user position, to design the integrity monitoring algorithms at receiver level (RAIM, AAIM), at local/global augmentation level (GBAS, SBAS) and at system level (GNSS ground monitoring stations, satellite).

Our work is subdivided into 5 major activities:

  • Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS)
  • Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS)
  • Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM)
  • Robust multi-sensor navigation
  • Alternative Positioning Navigation and Time (APNT)

This experience mostly gained in aviation serves also other safety of life applications which are Rail, Maritime and Road.

Current Projects:

  • ADVANSYS: Design of Advanced Antenna and Multi-Sensor Hybri Receiver for Machine Control in HarSh Environment (EU project)
  • BaSE: Bavarian security receiver (funded by BayMWI and DLR Space Agency)
  • Dependable Navigation (DLR internal project)
  • FlexiGuide
  • HETERIX
  • RCAS II: Rail Collision Avoidance System
  • TOPGAL: Total Performance concept for GBAS based Automatic Landings (DLR internal project)

Finished Projects:

  • ANASTASIA: Airborne New and Advanced Satellite Techniques & Technologies in A System Integrated Approach (EU project, 2005-2009)
  • FAGI: Future Air Ground Integration (DLR internal project, 2007-2010)
  • GalileoADAP: Galileo-Advanced Applications (DLR internal project, 2006-2011)
  • GAGARIN
  • ITMA: Ionospheric Threat Model Assessment
  • LINA: Local Integrity Navigation Augmentation (LuFo IV, 2007-2010)
