Air Transportation Systems
DLR Air Transportation Systems stands for research and teachings on the understanding of the system complexities in air transport. The research portfolio comprises of concepts, preliminary designs and the optimization of sub systems such as future aircraft configurations, as well as the simulation and assessment of entire air transportation systems with respect to economical and ecological sustainability.
Integrated Aircraft Design
The performance of aircraft is not equivalent to flight performance only but to the aircrafts impact on the efficiency of the entire transportation chain. Thus; the simulation of the transportation system constitutes the necessary basis for the derivation of technical requirements and targets for the design of novel aircraft. The selection and weighting of the different economic and ecologic targets depends on the particular future scenario considered.
Air Transport Operations and Infrastructures
The Department Air Transport Operations and Infrastructures examines operational concepts, planning processes and infrastructures with respect to their contribution to safe, passenger oriented, ecologic and economic air transport. Through integration of research on passenger behaviour, airlines, airports and air navigation service providers the department provides a comprehensive framework to derive requirements for future aircraft and to contribute from the operations perspective to the assessment of new technologies.
System Analysis Air Transport
Complex systems such as the air transportation system are characterized by a substantial number of components and interactions among the system elements. Therefore it is challenging to conclude a priori on the impact and added value of new technologies, hence, of changes to the system
