In the area around the North Pole of Mars, there is a large impact crater 30 kilometres wide, the inside of which is covered with bright water ice. And east of this crater, the surface of Mars is covered with a thin layer of frost. There are extensive dark dune fields around the crater. The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on the ESA space probe Mars Express imaged this area at 78 degrees North and 89 degrees East at an altitude of approximately 450 kilometres with an image resolution of 21 metres per pixel. The image data were recorded on 23 November 2006 during the 3696th Mars Express orbit. The original image data resolution will be reduced to give a better representation on the Internet.
