German Mars Exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters

Visitor to the exhibition
From 1 June until 5 July 2007 the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is presenting an exhibition "A New Perspective on Mars" at the UN Headquarters building in New York City.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Akasaka, alongside Ambassador Matussek, Permanent Representative of Germany at the UN in New York and Dr Ludwig Baumgarten, DLR board member, opened the exhibition on 7 June.
The free exhibition presents fascinating large-format 3-D images of our Martian neighbour in a definition never seen before, taken by the German High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) installed onboard the European Space Agency’s probe Mars Express. In addition, a wide variety of information about the planet Mars, its moons, and the exploration of the Red Planet will be presented.
The year 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite, during the International Geophysical year, the 50th session of the Committee of the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), and the 40th anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty.
Opening of the Mars Exhibition
In June, Germany celebrates these anniversaries at UN locations in Vienna and New York City. Focusing on space based disaster management, Germany participates in the UN anniversary exhibition at the Vienna International Centre. At the New York UN Headquarters, the exploration of Outer Space is the centre of interest.
The Mars Express probe is Europe’s first independent mission to another planet. Since Christmas 2003, the probe has been orbiting the Red Planet to enhance our knowledge about its geology, mineralogy and atmosphere. The main objective of the mission is to search for traces of water, which in the early days of the planet must have flowed across its surface in large quantities – a search in which DLR researchers are playing a key role.
Next to other research instruments, the mission carries the German HRSC high-performance camera. This High Resolution Stereo Camera is the first-ever system capable of taking photographs of planetary surfaces that combine high definition, colour, and a 3-D effect. DLR is responsible for the operation of the camera.
