For the second time, the "Space Factor" competition for students took place during the EANA Conference (European Astrobiology Network Association) as a half-day session. This competition offers young scientists a big forum to talk with other students and learn from each other.

SpaceLife doctoral student participates in Nordic-NASA Summer School 'Water, Ice and Origin of Life in the Universe' - or two weeks without darkness

Graduate students and early career scientists (up to 5 years after their first Ph.D.) in fields related to astrobiology could apply for this summer school. The course was organized by the Nordic Network of Astrobiology together with the NASA Astrobiology Institute in Iceland from July 2-15 2012.

The SpaceLife Doctoral Candidates Sonja Brungs and Petra Schwendner were awarded at the 50th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Aviation and Space Medicine (“Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin“) which took place in Bonn on September 27-29, 2012. Sonja Brungs received the "Rainer Kowoll First Presenter Preis", which was awarded for the first time, and the third poster price was lended to Petra Schwendner.

SpaceLife Doctoral Candidates participate in NASA Space Radiation Summer School
After Kristina Koch in 2011, Arif A. Chishti was selected in 2012 to participate in the NASA Space Radiation Summer School (“NSRSS”). In their doctoral theses, Arif A. Chishti and Kristina Koch work on space radiation biology topics since 2009 in the Cellular Biodiagnostics Group of the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine.

SpaceLife Doctoral Student graduated with „summa cum laude“ and received award
Jan Köhler started his PhD thesis with the title: “Gamma/Neutron separation in the Martian radiation environment” on January 1, 2009 and handed in the final version on November 28, 2011. He was supported by his supervisor Prof. Dr. Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber at the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany.

First SpaceLife Career Day at the University of Applied Sciences in Rheinbach.
Around fifty students and postdocs participated in the SpaceLife Career Day on September 17, 2011, at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in Rheinbach. Not only the SpaceLife doctoral candidates, but also participants of the annual conference of the Society of Biological Radiation Research (GBS2011), and students from other universities in the area, such as Cologne and Düsseldorf, but also from Bremen, profited from this opportunity to discuss different career paths with experienced speakers from academia, industry, and funding bodies.

Nicole Vagt defended her thesis on September 13, 2010 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The title of her thesis is: Gravity-sensing processes and gravity-dependent gene expression in plants studied under altered gravity conditions.

In July 2010, we had the chance to take part in the biggest conference about space research, which was this time located in Bremen and lasted one week. It was the 38th Committee of Space Research Scientific Assembly, bringing together about 3800 participants from 58 different countries.
