At DLR, the Institute of Aerospace Medicine serves as the interface between sophisticated technology and life science research including biology, medicine, and psychology. We conduct our research in close cooperation with leading national and international research institutions and industry.

Projects

MARE – The MATROSHKA AstroRad Radiation Experiment

Space radiation is a major health risk for humans and thus a decisive factor for planned long-term human space missions in the future. With the MARE experiment (Matroshka AstroRad Radiation Experiment), DLR and other partners are now making a major contribution to determining this radiation risk and developing protective measures. On the NASA Artemis I mission, the MARE experiment will for the first time fly two female phantoms to determine the radiation risk on its way to the Moon.

LOKI – Collaboration of Aerospace Operators and AI Systems

In aviation, intensive work is currently being done on the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. In contrast to current assistance systems, AI systems learn by processing large amounts of data and thus enable adaptation to their environment and their users.

CaVD-PACE project – “New treatments and diagnostic measures for cardiovascular diseases”

Pilot and air traffic controllers (ATCO) medical fitness is one of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) prioritised topics in the area of medical requirements to safeguard flight safety.

BiG C.R.O.P.® – Biological slurry treatment

The C.R.O.P.® (Combined Regenerative Organic food Production) process enables liquid farm manure such as cattle slurry and fermentation products from biogas plants to be processed into a fertilizer solution that is directly available to plants.

Bed rest studies

If astronauts are to live for long periods in space, on the Moon or on Mars in the future, effective countermeasures must be developed to deal with the negative effects of weightlessness and reduced gravity.

TaFMAC – A 10-year study to assess fitness, training and health in master athletes

The aim of the study with master athletes is to document the benefits and risks of competitive sport beyond the age of 35. Recommendations for action for health benefits can be derived on the basis of the data thus obtained.
