The second campaign of the bed rest study, which is performed by DLR on behalf of ESA inside the :envihab facility is well underway; all subjects are now 3 weeks in bed with six-degrees head-down tilt. They will remain in this position for a total of 60 days. Daily activities such as eating, washing, showering, bowel movement, as well as all leisure activities are all carried out in this position to make sure that the effects on the body (e.g. muscle- and bone loss, fluid shift to the upper part of the body and loss in cardiovascular load) resemble those in space. Half of the subjects will train with a specifically developed exercise device: a horizontal sledge jump system, with which they will perform jumping exercises to test the device for its use in space. It will take a while until all the effects of the simulated weightlessness / bed rest and the results on the effectiveness of the training are known to the 70 involved scientists: subjects will be tested by the DLR in Cologne for up to two years after completion of bed rest study.
