Biomedical Science Support Center
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Ralf Anken
Biolab Facility Responsible Center and ISS Utilization
This working group is focussing on tasks for research under space conditions as the life science part of the German Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC). Life Science Facilities will be supported for the International Space Station ISS. MUSC has been assigned by ESA as a Facility Responsible Center (FRC) for BIOLAB and KUBIK. The necessary ground infrastucture is already set up and operational. The first mission is the KUBIK SOYUZ flight to the International Space Station flight end of March, 2006.
Interdisciplinary Gravity Research
The team has longterm experience in the field of gravitational biology (Gravisensitive Cells) in close connection to the University of Bonn and diverse cooperations. The scientists support during preparation of experiments in microgravity by using ground based equipments (clinostats, centrifuges).
Telemedicine and Telematics
The working group develops techniques and instruments for the institution spanning support of medical care for astronautics, aeronautics, traffic and the health care sector. This also includes the institute's interdisciplinary research on life sciences by developing and implementing of integrated information and communication technologies. Partner and contractors in our telemedical application projects are civil aviation, the Medical Service of the German Armed Forces and various domains of the health care sector.
