Simulation Facility for Occupational Medicine Research (AMSAN)
The multi purpose research facility is designed for investigation in the area of aviation and space medicine and human factors. The facility is capable of housing up to 8 subjects at a time and providing for environmental control (artificial light, climate, sound proofing). It can be operated as a closed system and run in complete isolation from the outside for days or weeks.
Short-Arm Human Centrifuge (SAHC), DLR, Cologne (D)
With the Short-Arm Human Centrifuge (SAHC) in Cologne – provided by the ESA – artificial gravity will be created to afford fun-damental research in medicine and human physiology.
Clinostate microscopes (fast rotating clinostates with Zeiss-optics, fluorescence microscopy and CCD-cameras) provide the online observation of small organism in simulated weightlessness.
Clinostats, which are programmable and temperature controlled, enable investigations and multi-generation experiments with e.g. cell cultures or small aquatic systems in simulated weightlessness. Activation and fixation of the samples during rotation is possible. Furthermore, samples can be exposed to a defined gas atmosphere.
