Simulation Facility for Occupational Medicine Research (AMSAN)

.
.
.
.

The multi purpose research facility is designed for investigation in the area of aviation and space medicine and human factors. The facility is capable of housing up to 8 subjects at a time and providing for environmental control (artificial light, climate, sound proofing). It can be operated as a closed system and run in complete isolation from the outside for days or weeks.

The facility is managed by the Department of Flight Physiology but can be also used by other departments as well as by external clients (after early consultation).

Research in this versatile facility is focused on:

  • Examinations of the effects of nocturnal aircraft noise on sleep and performance (assessment and evaluation of critera).

  • Standardized metabolic balance studies in a controlled environment for questions in space physiology (calcium, muscle and bone metabolism, cardiovascular and volume regulation).

  • Investigations under the conditions of simulated weightlessness (bedrest, 6° head-down-tilt).

  • Simulating critical duty rosters of aircrews.

  • Assessing changes in the circadian system through time zone flights (jet-lag), shift-work and irregular duty hours..

  • Clinical studies for the assessment of efficacy of drugs in the aerospace environment.
