Successful disputation in times of corona

Felix Fuchs, doctoral student of the second SpaceLife generation, successfully completed his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at the Georg August University of Göttingen on 13 May 2020. The subject of the disputation was the results of his doctoral thesis "B. subtilis biofilm formation under extreme terrestrial and simulated extraterrestrial conditions", which he completed at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in the Department of Radiation Biology under Prof. Dr. Ralf Möller (Head of Space Microbiology).

e³ (ESA, ESTEC, Erasmus building) = Astrobiology and Spaceflight welcomed at ESA
“Astrobiology and Spaceflight” was the topic of this year’s conference of the European Astrobiology Network Association (EANA). The conference was hosted in Noordwijk, Netherlands, at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) complex of the European Space Agency (ESA). Almost 120 scientists from all over the world participated in the annual European meeting. 54 lectures and 64 posters have been presented during the four days of the conference.

SpaceLife Doktoranden auch beim Tag der Luft- und Raumfahrt 2015 im DLR aktiv
SpaceLife Doktorandin Dagmar Koschnitzki gab ihr Wissen an die Besucher des "Tag der Luft- und Raumfahrt 2015" im DLR weiter. In ihrer Präsentation im :envihab referierte sie über ihre Forschung am hyperthermophilen, also hitzeliebenden Organismus "Ignicoccus hospitalis" aus der Tiefsee. Diese Untersuchungen sollen helfen bei der Suche nach Leben auf anderen Planeten.

SpaceLife Doctoral Candidate Oliver Schüler involved in sounding rocket Mapheus5 flight experiment
Today, the sounding rocket mission Mapheus5 was launched from the Swedish launch site Esrange, reaching an altitude of 253 kilometres and carrying four different DLR experiments. After 74 seconds, the experiments from biology and materials physics began to experience a phase of microgravity, lasting 6 minutes.

Claudia Hahn, staff member of the Radiation Biology Department, was awarded the first poster prize at the annual meeting of GfKORR - Society for Corrosion Protection. The topic of this year’s meeting was “Copper – diverse and corrosion-resistant materials for various purposes”.

Sonja Brungs mit Albrecht-Ludwig-Berblinger-Preis ausgezeichnet
Der Albrecht-Ludwig-Berblinger Preis der Deutschen Akademie für Luft- und Reisemedizin würdigt jährlich herausragende Arbeiten im Bereich Luft-, Reise- und Raumfahrtmedizin und richtet sich besonders an den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs. Ausgezeichnet wurde nun die Doktorarbeit von Dr. rer. nat. Sonja Brungs, die sie im Rahmen ihres SpaceLife-Stipendiums im DLR-Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin bei PD Dr. Ruth Hemmersbach in der AG Gravitationsbiologie angefertigt hat.

European Astrobiology Meeting EANA2014: inspired by Scottish bagpipe music
From 13th to 16th October the 14th European Astrobiology Conference (EANA14) was organized and hosted in Edinburgh (UK) by the UK Centre for Astrobiology (Prof. Dr. Charles S. Cockell and his team). Over 150 scientists from over 30 different countries participated in the EANA2014 conference, presented their work and discussed current issues of the ongoing astrobiological projects.

SpaceLife Doktorand Oliver Schüler beteiligt an "Gravitationsbiologie im Fallturm"
Erfolgreiche Technologieerprobung: Ein interdisziplinäres DLR Studierendenteam testet ihre eigens entwickelte Hardware für Pflanzenexperimente im Fallturm in Bremen. „Die Experimentiermöglichkeiten im Fallturm sind faszinierend und die Unterstützung durch die ZARM Fallturm-Betriebsmannschaft exzellent.“, so die Meinung der Studenten vor Ort.

Peng-Fei Yang wins Helmholtz prize for PhD students in 2014 in the category of aviation, space and traffic
Having won a scholarship from the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC), Peng-Fei joined the SpaceLife program in order to do his PhD studies in order to further our understanding of mechanical interactions between muscle and bone. Whilst it was clear that muscular contractions must cause the largest deformations in bone, this mechanical interplay had never been measured.

Studie zur Stoffwechsellage im entlasteten Muskel
Derzeit wird im Rahmen einer Doktorarbeit aus dem Stipendienprogramm „SpaceLife“ am Institut eine Studie durchgeführt, die den Einfluss von Ernährung und neuromuskulärer Stimulation auf den Glukosestoffwechsel im entlasteten Muskel untersucht.

The student contest “Space Factor” of the 13th European Workshop on Astrobiology (EANA 13) gives young scientists the opportunity to introduce themselves and their research to other PhD students, to connect with them, to learn from each other, to exchange thoughts, to gain new insights and ideas and to establish new contacts and maybe even cooperation.
