SpaceLife Doctoral Student graduated with „summa cum laude“ and received award

The SpaceLife doctoral candidate Jan Köhler together with his supervisor Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber after defending his Ph.D. thesis "Gamma/Neutron separation in the Martian environment".
Jan Köhler started his PhD thesis with the title: “Gamma/Neutron separation in the Martian radiation environment” on January 1, 2009 and handed in the final version on November 28, 2011. He was supported by his supervisor Prof. Dr. Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber at the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany.

During his thesis he developed a method to allow the separation of gamma radiation and neutrons detected by the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD). RAD was developed at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and is on the way to Mars since November 2011 (Mars Science Laboratory - MSL Mission -).

Jan Köhler defended his thesis on January 26, 2012 at the Christian Albrechts University Kiel. He gave his half an hour presentation which was followed by a one hour oral examination concerning his presentation and related fields. Two weeks later he received his doctoral degree with the best mark, “summa cum laude”.

Furthermore the "Helmholtz Space Life Sciences Research School" is proud to present that Jan Köhler was awarded with the cerificate: "AUSZEICHNUNG FÜR DIE BESTE DISSERTATION IM FACH PHYSIK 2011/2012" by the "Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Physik" of the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel (Germany) in June 2012.

"Auszeichnung für die beste Dissertation im Fach Physik"
