The great number of scientists, engineers, and managers who participated in the hitherto existing symposia reflects the high interest in the use of small satellites for dedicated missions applied to earth observation, from scientific earth observation missions to technology demonstration missions.

On 22 July 2012 at 08:41:39 CEST, the first small German satellite in the ‘On-Orbit-Verification’ (OOV) programme was carried into orbit from the Cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan by a Russian Soyuz launch vehicle. TET-1 is a technology testbed. The DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics were involved in the development stages with a camera that can be used to detect forest fires.

Planetologen entwickeln Messinstrument für Weltraum-Mission Münster - Das Ding im Plexiglaskasten thronte Donnerstag auf einem Tisch im Festsaal der Universität. Es heißt Mertis und hat wohl eine der längsten Reisen vor sich, die jemals unternommen worden sind. Mindestens 80 Millionen Kilometer ist der Merkur von der Erde entfernt. Wenn aber 2014 die Mission „BepiColombo“ der Europäischen Weltraumagentur ESA startet, wird die Ariane-5-Trägerrakete eine um ein Vielfaches längere Strecke zurückzulegen haben. Mindestens sechs Jahre wird das dauern. „Um zum Merkur zu kommen, muss die Rakete in verschiedenen Umlaufbahnen unseres Sonnensystems Schwung holen“, sagt Prof. Harald Hiesinger vom Institut für Planetologie der Universität. Hiesinger und sein Team betreuen wissenschaftlich die Entwicklung des Instruments Mertis, das die Beschaffenheit der Gesteine auf dem Merkur analysieren soll.
