The Profile Measuring Instrument PMV on space probes Venera 15 and16

PMV was an infrared Fourier Transform Spectrometer of Michelson Interferometer type onboard the two Soviet deep space missions “Venera-15” and “Venera-16” launched successfully in 1983.

It was developed in close collaboration of planetary scientists and designers of optoelectronic instruments in order to tailor it optimally to the scientific tasks, namely the estimation of temperature profiles and contents of minor constituents of the Venusian atmosphere. Figure 1 shows the opto-mechanical part of the instrument. Some of the various scientific results are displayed in figure 2:
