Imaged diffraction pattern (DLR)is a new technology for geometrical sensor calibration which uses custommade diffractive optical elements (DOE) as a beamsplitter.
An incoming laser beam is split into a number of beams with precisely-known propagation directions. This Fraunhofer diffraction pattern is invariant against translation. Each projected image point represents a point at infinity.
The mentioned properties allow a complete camera calibration with a single image. Complex bundle adjustment procedures with several images are not necessary.
The results are in accordance with classical camera calibration methods using the pinhole camera model and a radial distortion model. The method is reliable, reproducible and time saving. The compact set-up allows in-field calibration.
