Weather and mountains

Precise analyses and forecasts of weather situations which tend to be particularly complicated above mountain complexes remain a demanding task for atmospheric research. Precipitation processes are of special significance. Recurring episodes of copious precipitation can induce severe flodding. Improved warnings have the potential to reduce economic damages. Strong wave motions within the atmospheric flow across mountain ranges und the related intense turbulence constitute a permanent threat for aviation.

The Alpine region is a focus for research at IPA. Routine measurements are augmented by remote sensing systems and aircraft missions (e.g. Radar, Lidar). These are used for computer simulations of relevant episodes. IPA was at the forefront of the planning and execution of the Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP) and its Special Observing Period during autumn 1999.
