Bachelorarbeit / Praktikum: Parameter study for mantle convection

Beschreibung:

We have developed a spherical convection model that solves fluid dynamic equations to model the mantle flow in terrestrial planets. Convection processes depend on many parameters, e.g. the ratio of core radius to planetary radius (Rc/Rp), the depth dependence of the viscosity, and the surface temperature, that are often not well constrained. The influence of these specific parameters needs to be studied with a detailed parameter study - necessary to better understand the convection processes. We are looking for a student to perform this kind of parameter study.

The student will learn (get)

·          how to handle and run a complex 3D convection code (C++) on a cluster

·          how to use a visualization tool (IDL) and analyze data

·          some basic understanding on planetary physics in particular in planetary dynamics

The internship can be extended to a Bachelor Thesis. This would imply a detailed literature research for comparing issues as well as an geophysical evaluation.

Bibliography:

●      Practical IDL Programming, Liam Edward Gumley

●      Geodynamics, Donald L. Turcotte and Gerald Schubert

This thesis/internship report can be written in both English or German.
