Introduction

	Modern democratic societies are based on the free movement of information, people and goods. In the past years the awareness of the vulnerability of our society against new threats such as terrorist and cyberspace attacks has risen. As a consequence many measures have been taken in order to improve civil security from several points of view. Amongst these are increased research and development efforts. Examples are the security research program of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Science and the "7th Framework Programme of the European Commission", which has a focus on security research. Despite this, security research is a very diverse field and characterized by many different stakeholders in industry, public research organizations and universities. Until now there is no established security research community or a dedicated university program in security research with strong technological orientation.
	In view of the importance of security research for society and economy the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V. (DLR) and the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) have identified security research as one of their main pillars. With this proposal they will join forces in order to improve training, education and research on security technologies significantly beyond the current status. Two institutes of DLR (Institute of Planetary Research, Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics) and three departments of TUB, the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and the Center for Technology and Society, contribute to the Research School.
	The focus of the research school is on training and education of young researchers in physics, optical and electrical engineering, information and communication technologies relevant for security. The students of the research school are members of one of the participating research groups at DLR or TUB. In addition to scientific education and research training on the topic of their PhD thesis, the participants of the school will be offered a dedicated curriculum in topics such as societal impacts of security, ethical aspects, security and economy, security scenarios, etc., which are indispensable for the successful development and implementation of security technologies. They will also get a dedicated training in soft skills such as presentation techniques or team working. The participants will get their PhD degree from the TUB.
