The World of Work is profoundly changing at the beginning of the 21st century. The changes are determined by technological developments and a rapid globalization. The structure of enterprises as widely well as work relations are changing. Demographic alterations and new value patterns are becoming important for economy. The working world of the future will focus on the individual, his skills and knowledge, his creativity and motivation. This requires new forms of human work that will challenge the structures and working conditions established in the previous century. Science has to face these factors, to identify risks and challenges in order to develop concepts for the future.


The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), together with the Project Management Agency in the DLR, supports manifold initiatives, concepts and projects in this field. In 2004 the division on "Innovative work design and services" coordinated 461 project and a budget of 27 Mio € annually. The support is focussed on the following priority areas:
