Programmes and projects of the Federal Ministry of Health


The organisation unit Health Research of PT-DLR is also in charge of project management for the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The range of tasks covers various key areas of the Federal Ministry of Health's (BMG) departmental research, such as drug and substance abuse, the safety of pharmacotherapy, Antibiotic resistance, quality assurance in healthcare, patient safety and the care of people with dementia or cancer. Alongside this, individual research and pilot studies are supported by the BMG as part of departmental research.

Improving medication safety


As part of the action plan for "Improving medication safety in Germany" (see link in the right-hand column "AMTS action plan"), the BMG sponsors various individual projects. The objective is to improve the requirements for the proper use of medication and thereby reduce avoidable adverse drug events.

Addiction and drugs


The pilot programs of the Federal Ministry of Health in the field of drug and substance abuse are aimed at implementing the Drugs and Addiction Action Plan and the National Strategy on Drug and Addiction Policy of the Federal Government’s Commissioner on Narcotic Drugs regarding legal and illegal drugs. The lead partner supports the BMG in the design, call for tenders and monitoring of research and pilot projects.

Model Programme for Promoting Medical Quality Assurance


The objective of the model programme is to promote the swift implementation of legal requirements and to establish prerequisites for testing enhanced quality assurance measures that go beyond the legal requirements. The model programme has therefore taken on a significant role as pacemaker for quality assurance in Germany.

Demenz ist die häufigste und folgenreichste psychiatrische Erkrankung im Alter. Bis zu 1,4 Millionen Menschen sind heute in Deutschland an Demenz erkrankt, bis zum Jahr 2030 könnte sich die Zahl statistischen Schätzungen zufolge auf etwa 2,2 Mio. erhöhen.

National Cancer Plan


In June 2008, the Federal Ministry of Health initiated the National Cancer Plan (Nationaler Krebsplan, NKP) in cooperation with the German Cancer Society, Deutsche Krebshilfe and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Tumorzentren.

Antibiotic resistance, hygiene and nosocomial infections


Every year, between 400,000 and 600,000 patients in Germany contract hospital-acquired infections; it is estimated that between 7,500 and 15,000 die as a result. Inappropriate prescription and application of antibiotics and insufficient hygiene are the main reasons for the increase in antibiotic resistance.
