The organisation unit Health Research of PT-DLR is also in charge of project management for the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The range of tasks covers various key areas of the Federal Ministry of Health's (BMG) departmental research, such as drug and substance abuse, the safety of pharmacotherapy, quality assurance in healthcare, patient safety and the care of people with dementia or cancer. Alongside this, individual research and pilot studies are supported by the BMG as part of departmental research.
Like all ministries, the Federal Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, BMG) requires scientific knowledge to aid it in conceptually preparing political and administrative decisions. If the necessary knowledge is not available, the BMG initiates research and pilot studies accordingly. Ongoing evaluation of such measures also forms an important component of the Ministry’s funding strategy. The purpose of its pilot programs is to identify practicable options for action in the fields of health promotion, prevention and healthcare in the Federal Republic of Germany. In this regard, the funding of studies requires a generally accepted level of knowledge in medicine and the social sciences from which structures and processes can be derived that are effective under the conditions of everyday healthcare provision. Funding in these programs is therefore aimed not solely at generating new findings, but derives its research nature from organisational and process-related circumstances, and focuses mainly on ensuring the effectiveness, quality and cost-efficiency of the healthcare system.
