Research and Development Phase Standardisation has been implemented within DLR as a tool to provide new techniques and results of the DLR institutes and facilities to the general public and to forward the transfer in industrially applicable products. The division in charge supports the DLR project responsible researchers and developers while realizing standardisation activities e.g. INS and TNS projects.
This technology transfer is promoted by the two projects “Innovation with Norms and Standards (INS)” and “Transfer of Research and Development Results by Norms and Standards (TNS)” of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). DLR with its main research areas energy, transport, aeronautics, and space is getting involved in both programs. In this context, it closely cooperates with the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) on the topic of identification and realisation of standardisation aspects of DLR-own research programs.
Lightweight Construction of Rail Vehicles
To use lightweight construction potentials of rail vehicles for the purpose of energy efficiency enhancement and cost reduction, the relevant standards concerning the approval of rail vehicles must reflect the current state of the art. For this, DLR takes advantage of the research results gained during the “Next Generation Train” research project by integration into the standard development.

Wind Tunnel Measurement According to EN14076-6 on Evaluation of Cross Wind Effects on Railway Vehicles
Concerning the approval of high speed trains, an integrative evaluation method shall be created via a harmonized European draft standard developed by DLR, thus enhancing the interoperability of the European rail traffic. For this purpose, DLR operates a particular wind tunnel.

Optical Communication Technologies for Data Downlinks of Low-Flying Earth Sensing Satellites
The accumulating high data amounts with earth observation missions need new efficient data transmission methods concerning the communication with ground stations. Therefore, a compatible method is to be established in an international standard, thus facilitating and harmonising the cooperation of various international partners. Nowadays, commercial and scientific missions require a secure data connection as well. To this end, international level standardisation activities are available lead-managed by DLR‘s German Space Operations Center (GSOC) in order to develop integrative standards concerning safety architectures, authentication and encryption algorithms, and key management.

Qualification of Optical Components for Concentrating Solar Power Systems
The project objective is an integrative European draft standard for evaluation and qualification of optical components as required for the construction of solar thermic power plants. DLR’s performed research is significantly supposed to provide a basis for this draft standard.

Measurement and Evaluation of the Surface Shape of Mirror Elements for Concentrating Solar Technology
Concerning solar thermic power plants, the exact shape of the mirror surface has a decisive impact on the outcome. By a uniform standard for evaluation of mirror shapes, the selection of suitable mirrors for solar thermic power plants according to standardised criteria and thus high product quality and effectiveness shall be assured. The draft standard is based on the deflectometry method for non-contact measurement of mirror surfaces having been refined by DLR during the recent years.

Force Limited Vibration Testing (FLVT)
During the transport phase from earth to orbit, components and assemblies of space systems are exposed to extreme vibration and shock loads by the launcher system. The project objective is an international draft standard concerning vibration tests using the force limited vibration testing to avoid the overload of expensive space hardware during the test phases.

Standardisation of Testing Method Requirements for the Conduct of Laboratory Experiments, Performed under Simulation of Extraterrestrial Atmosphere
By an international standard, the measurement requirements of laboratory experiments in space, performed under simulation of extraterrestrial atmosphere shall be harmonised. Thereby, results of different test laboratories and experimental arrangements can directly be compared.
