Im Rahmen des Europäischen Forschungsrats (European Research Council - ERC) wird grundlagenorientierter Forschung gefördert. Hier wurden am 30. November 2007 sogenannte Advanced Investigator Grants ausgeschrieben. Mit den Forschungsstipendien von bis zu 500.000,- € pro Jahr sollen auf ihrem Gebiet etablierte und führende Forscher für bis zu 5 Jahre unterstützt werden.
Für den Bereich Raumfahrt ist vor allem der Ausschreibungsbereich „Engineering and Physical Sciences" interessant. Hier sind hervorzuheben: PE9 Universal Sciences (e. g. Astrophysics, Solar Sytem, Galactic + extra-galactic astronomy, planetary systems, cosmology, space science, instrumentation), PE10 Earth system science (e. g. physical geography, geology,geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, climatology, global environmental change) aber auch PE 7 Systems and communication engineering (e. g. optical engineering) sowie PE2 Fundamental constituents of matter (e. g. particle physics).
