Even today, satellite-based Earth observation has produced a variety of application-oriented services and products for the benefit of scientific research and business. That said, with sensor and satellite technology continuously being developed further, the number of Earth observation missions and the resultant volume of data is growing continuously.
This calls for more efficient evaluation methods both for specific sensors as well as for multiple missions. Moreover, such large data volumes imply a heavy demand on the development of innovative IT technologies and more powerful processors for data evaluation. Also, the reliability of the information obtained from a data product is predicated on a sufficient level of data calibration and validation.
