The trains of the future should be powerful, safe and fuel-efficient. To accomplish this, DLR is combining its expertise in various fields, including aerodynamics, lightweight construction, energy management and communications.
Based on wind tunnel models (silver in this image), crosswind stability and options for optimising drag are being investigated. To optimise the topology of the train structure, a design has been drafted (bright mesh structure) from which conclusions can be drawn about the main load-bearing paths in the carriage body. From this, important information can be derived for the production technologies to be used in the Next Generation Train.
