Job opportunities for students

As a government research facility, we work closely with universities and colleges in the higher education and training of young researchers. We take care of interns, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students. As a major research institution between academia and industry, we offer excellent research conditions at industrially relevant topics with theoretical and experimental aspects.

Our offer

We are always happy to work with motivated students. In addition to individual supervision by our researchers, we offer a pleasant working environment in well equipped offices and laboratories. By lecturers from our institute we are in close contact with the Technical University of Munich (Dirk Zimmer, Martin Otter) and other universities in Munich. We welcome cooperation with any other university in the external supervision of undergraduate or graduate work.

Our team is just as our research broadly based with engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians.

Oberpfaffenhofen is located in an attractive area in the south west of Munich, called “five lakes region”. The Institute is well connected by the public transport system and the A96 motorway.

Getting connected

Our offer is addressed to students of degree courses in mechanical engineering, control engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, computer science, physics and the like. In the normal case, students start at DLR with beginning of their bachelor thesis or later. Apart from the application to the specific job postings we always welcome unsolicited applications. Each student has built up in the course of studying an individual background and interests that may be included in the task. Based on the application materials, we try to identify matching research projects at the Institute.

We would like to make a more accurate picture of your previous knowledge based upon your application. For this we need a compilation of your visited lectures including marks, knowledge of software, undertaken internships and student projects, and research interests. Your application should indicate the period in which the work can take place. In case the work is compulsory, we need to know the requirements of your university.

For unsolicited applications ideally you have identified on the homepage a research topic of interest. You get an even deeper insight on the basis of our publications.

We would be very happy about your application. Please send your request to Dirk Zimmer.

I am a graduate of the Technical University of Dresden in aerospace engineering. When I inquired an employee of DLR Oberpfaffenhofen for available topics for a thesis, I was suggested an interesting topic directly and simply. In my thesis I had the sole responsibility for the development of a pre-design method for radial and mixed-flow compressor. This is now being integrated into a system model of a novel air-conditioning system. The challenge was to implement the theory learned in the lectures on turbo machinery in an efficient, yet accurate design technique. The subsequent application of my work in the development of a real climate system made the decision easy for me to give the DLR preference to a thesis at the University. I particularly enjoyed the academic atmosphere of the DLR. For a large company, still the paths were short to colleagues and supervisors who always found time for my questions and showed me many other interesting projects at DLR.
