A widely encountered problem in the scientific institutes and facilities of the DLR is the management of rapidly expanding data volumes. This data includes the results of experiments as well as of numerical simulations.
As part of the DLR aerospace project IMENS, at the Institute of Software Technology, then called "Simulation and Software Technology Lab", a data management concept was developed for simulation data, and a first implementation was done within the integration system TENT. Meanwhile, the concept has been extended to cover scientific data more generally, and implemented in the stand-alone data management tool DataFinder.
