A widely encountered problem in the scientific institutes and facilities of the DLR is the management of rapidly expanding data volumes. This data includes the results of experiments as well as of numerical simulations.
As part of the DLR aerospace project IMENS, at DLR Simulation and Software Technology a data management concept was developed for simulation data, and a first implementation was done within the integration system TENT. Meanwhile, the concept has been extended to cover scientific data more generally, and implemented in the stand-alone data management tool DataFinder.
Objectives:
- Establishing large data archives. To give the data long-term usability, raw data is linked to formalized descriptions.
- Subject-specific software tools can easily be given access to a data server, thus (loosely) integrating them. This makes the data management solution a central feature of a problem-solving environment.
- The solution can be used as a database for future data mining tools.
