IMENS

Objective and description

The objective of the IMENS project was the development of a simulation environment for the coupled flow structure analysis of hermally stressed components of re-entry vehicles.

On the flow side, CFD solver TAU+ (from DLR) and DAVIS-VOL (a development of EADS) are used for the coupled simulation. ANSYS or MSC/NASTRAN are used for structure calculation. Both thermal and mechanical stresses are taken into account. Due to the different requirements for the linkage, TAU+ was integrated with a TAU+ co-process developed by the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology. An ANSYS >co-process was also developed. ANSYS permits extraction of the data relevant for coupling via a script cache, making this co-process considerably easier to implement than the NASTRAN co-process, for which the co-process must analyze input and output data completely syntactically and semantically).
