Motivation
Many of today's engineering applications require the numerical simulation of underlying physical processes such as fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, thermodynamics and their multidisciplinary coupling. The simulations are usually very complex, and require a multistage process chain that typically encompass pre-processing of the simulation codes, the simulations themselves, post-processing and visualizations. Working through such a complex simulation workflow is a very time-consuming task for the typical user (engineer), especially as such simulations are possible only with distributed computing resources, such as supercomputers or clusters, with their very different systems and operation. Complexity is further increased by the need to collaborate with colleagues or other institutions. Therefore, to reduce the time needed for the entire simulation, it is necessary to reduce the time needed to manage simulation workflows in a distributed system, and simplify and automate it as far as possible.
