A modular wind tunnel
For over 100 years wind tunnels have been one of the tools used by fluid mechanics engineers. Aircraft, automobiles, trains, sportsmen and even bridges have been investigated with the help of wind tunnels. There were various reasons for such studies. The origins of air turbulence are of special interest, and air resistance also plays an important role, for example in the fuel consumption of cars. At DLR_School_Lab Göttingen you yourselves can put together a wind tunnel and learn about the functions and effects of each component in fluid flow.

Detecting tornados
Do we have tornados here too? What is a tornado, anyway?
Tornados not only exist in the USA; they can arise here in Germany as well. Observations confirm that in southern Lower Saxony there are about five tornados every ten years which leave behind a destructive track. That's reason enough for the DLR_School_Lab Göttingen to investigate this phenomenon. With the help of a "tornado machine" you can yourselves produce a whirlwind and become acquainted in experiments with the interesting conditions that favor the emergence and destructive impact of tornados.

The wind as musician
Why are the vibrating strings of an aeolian harp interesting to scientists? Wind not only makes musical instrument strings vibrate. It can also cause bridges, high voltage transmission lines, towers and automobile antennas to vibrate violently, ending up in a "resonance catastrophe" causing their destruction.

Everything that flies makes use of flow. That’s why someone who constructs aircraft has to completely understand flow to assure that a plane will fly safely and efficiently. Since flow generally cannot be seen, it has to be made visible. Scientists use various methods to do this; one of them involves a layer of soap film.
