Flying into space

Traveling into a mysterious vacuum

Looking at a clear, blue, morning sky it is hard to imagine that the world only a few kilometers higher up suddenly becomes cold and hostile to life. There the atmosphere is thinner and the air pressure lower.

Materials research

Lightweight, stable and extremely tough

Alarm at the airport: a jet crashes down onto the runway - the landing gear is broken. But the expected catastrophe does not take place, and the passengers leave the plane unharmed. What appears to us to be a wonder is actually the achievement of science and research engineers.

The most powerful machines on earth

"Leaving the earth behind in order to explore the infinite distances of space." This great dream of mankind along with an unrestrained thirst for knowledge gave rise to the most powerful machines on earth - rockets.

Combustion technology

Looking into the heart of a flame

Experts as well as laypeople controversially discuss the future of our energy supply. However, they do agree on one thing - we will not be able to do without fossil fuels like petroleum, coal and natural gas for a long time to come. However, the exhaust gases generated by the associated combustion processes burden people and their environment. For this reason the scientists at DLR are really fired up about finding ways to reduce the emission of pollutants while at the same time increasing the efficiency of combustion processes.

Measurement technology

Seeing the invisible

We can only see a very small part of the wide spectrum of electromagnetic radiation around us. As a result, much valuable information is inaccesible to us. Optical measurement technology opens up a whole new world of perspectives: coughing, sunlight, jet propulsion and a candle flame all have something in common.
