SOLREF - Solar Steam Reforming of Methane Rich Gas for Synthesis Gas Production
What is SOLREF?
Conversion (reforming) of natural gas (methane) with steam is a well established industrial process. It is used for large scale production of hydrogen or synthesis gas (a mixture of primarily H2 and CO) as an intermediate step to further products. The reforming process is a high temperature endothermic catalytic reaction. The energy content of the product gases is in general approximately 25% higher than that of the hydrocarbon feed. When operating the reforming process with concentrated solar radiation, the solar energy is converted into chemical energy and therefore it increases the energy content of the gas. Consequently the product gas can be considered as a solar upgraded fuel.
