A joint declaration of intent forms the framework for future co-operation of the Institute of Solar Research and the Solar Thermal Energy Research Group (STERG) of the South African Stellenbosch University. A scientist exchange in the field of research "point-focusing systems" has led the way towards this agreement.
The two research partners see cooperation opportunities particularly in the following areas:
Other possibilities of cooperation, e.g. in the field of parabolic trough power plants, are under discussion.
South Africa is more and more becoming an important region for solar thermal technologies. Three solar power plants with a total capacity of 200MW are currently being built, more plants with over 400MW are in project development. This development is supported by the outstanding radiation conditions in South Africa, which are among the best in the world.
STERG is the leading university-research group in South Africa who explores the area of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP). One focus of their work is the testing and development of technologies for solar tower power plants.
The MoU opens the chance for the DLR Institute of Solar Research to perform jointly with STERG development work in the growing CSP market South Africa. The planned activities range from fundamental research to application-oriented projects.
The South African partner will benefit from the experience of the DLR-Institute of Solar Research, gained in other markets and previous projects. Cooperation is planned for the next three years, a renewal option is already included in the MoU.
