Department Facilities and Solar Materials
The department operates the large facilities of DLR’s Solar Research and has the objective to provide service at a dedicated level both to internal (DLR) and external (industrial and research partners) customers. At the site Koeln-Porz currently the large facilities comprise the high flux solar furnace and the high flux solar simulator. These facilities can deliver highly concentrated optical radiation at irradiances up to several MW/m² and radiant powers above 10 kW. Additionally the department has the access to a research platform which has been installed at the half level of the tower of the solar thermal demonstration power tower at Jülich (STJ); it is designed to receive radiant power of up to 500 kW.
Besides the provision of highly concentrated optical radiation the department delivers customer consulting services to design experiments and special test arrangements, to carry out and to supervise experimental campaigns, to acquire and supply experimental and related meteorological data, as well as to support the evaluations. In addition to the services the department comprises research on materials employed in solar electricity, process heat and fuel generation.
