enerMENA - A support program for the implementation of solar thermal power plant technology in North Africa

At present the creation of a massive solar power capacity for electricity production in North African countries is being intensively discussed. The enerMENA project under the leadership of the DLR supports the DESERTEC concept which may serve as a guide. The aim of DESERTEC is to produce cost-effective solar electricity in North Africa and to transport part of it through high voltage DC power lines to Europe. It is estimated that a significant part of the local and fifteen percent of Europe’s demand for electricity can be met from such sources in the medium-term.

Meteorological Network

enerMENA Meteo-Network

The main objective behind the establishment of the enerMENA network of meteorological stations (enerMENA Meteo-Network) is to supply reliable meteorological data of the MENA region especially those of the Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) that are necessary for the implementation of CSP technologies. In the first phase of the project, eight high-precision meteorological stations are being installed in five MENA partner countries to set up a base for the enerMENA Meteo-Network.

Implementation Workshop “enerMENA CSP Teaching Materials”

enerMENA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have organised the third “enerMENA Implementation Workshop” in collaboration with the Moroccan Association of Professors (GIZ), Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN), the Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles (IRESEN), the Agence Nationale pour le Développement des Energies Renouvelables et de l’Efficacité Energétique (ADEREE) and the Office National de l’Electricité (ONE) at the Faculty of Science of the Mohammed Premier University in Oujda from June 12-14, 2012 with the participation of 25 professors.
