The Institute of Solar Research consists of the following departments:

Concentrating Solar Technologies department

The Concentrating Solar Technologies department focuses on concentrating solar technologies for various applications such as electricity generation, thermochemical processes and process heat. These technologies utilise solar energy not only for direct power generation during sunshine, but also for controllable supply using thermal storage to ensure continuous power even in the absence of direct sunlight. Our current research focuses on solar tower systems using molten salt, air or particles as heat transfer media and molten salt parabolic trough systems.

Qualification department

The focus of the Qualification department is on the continuous optimisation of the operation and maintenance of solar thermal power plants and photovoltaic systems. We develop advanced measurement methods and systems to analyse and evaluate solar components, systems and meteorological factors in detail. The aim is to increase the efficiency of solar thermal energy generation plants, extend the service life of components and improve their adaptability to local conditions.

Sustainable Systems Process Engineering department

Established in January 2024, the Sustainable Systems Process Engineering department is addressing the transformation of the chemical industry to successfully transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and material flows. The aim is to identify new sustainable technologies for the industry and to develop both scientific knowledge and practical solutions. To drive the transformation of the chemical industry, our research focuses on several key areas, including system design, process piloting, process intelligence and metrology.
