Enabling Innovation

Enabling Innovation is a science-based management tool which permits non-university research institutions to analyse and optimise their own innovation capability. Under a BMBF-funded project carried out in cooperation with the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and Görgen & Köller GmbH, a manual was developed which lists all the capabilities a non-university research facility needs if it intends to initiate and commercialise innovations successfully.

On the one hand, the economic success of an innovation is determined by its own qualities: Does the technology, for example, offer an advantage in competition with existing solutions? On the other hand, however, whether or not an invention may become an innovation and a market success also depends on the qualities of the research facility and/or institute. The way an institution works determines its innovation capability. Are there any points where the commercialisation strategy might be optimised? Can the process of innovation be made more efficient? Are offers of support for the transfer of technology being used adequately? Are the appropriate structures in place? Are the necessary resources available? These are only a few of the questions which Enabling Innovation may help to answer. The Enabling Innovation method may be used by an institute either on its own or with support from experienced technology transfer experts.

To apply the Enabling Innovation method, institutes attend a moderated workshop. At its end, a profile of the institute's innovation capability will emerge which may reveal possible areas of improvement, on which recommendations will be provided. This gives an institute a chance of reliably analysing, assessing, and controlling its own innovation capability.

The tool is ready for use by any non-university research facility. We will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about its content and implementation details.
