Atmospheric compensated imaging

In imaging, just as with laser beam propagation, atmospheric turbulence generated by wind, air pressure and temperature differences also leads to disturbances in the optical path. Consequently, the resulting images appear blurred, distorted or the brightness has changed. This corresponds to a widening of the minimum possible diffraction spot, which leads to a loss of image details. The use of adaptive optics enables a partial compensation of these phase distortions, which can significantly increase the image resolution.

Multi-conjugate adaptive optical methods or iterative optimisation algorithms offer a novel approach, also in the case of volume-distributed turbulence, on which the investigated scenarios are based, to successfully improve distortions in the imaging process. Full compensation of the volume distributed turbulence with today's approaches is still not possible due to the high requirements of the spatial resolution or the bandwidth of wavefront sensors and adaptive mirrors.
